Abby and Cody visit LaConcorde Orphanage

Cody: “Today Abby and myself had the wonderful opportunity to visit our site.  The LaConcorde Orphanage is a story about survival.  The original building was a 2-storey structure that housed the orphanage and a classroom; this was completely destroyed by the earthquake on January 12, 2010.  The director (Frantz Bastien) and his mother were left to rebuild the center.  Mama Bastien stayed on the site throughout the hardest of times, with zero shelter to ensure the safety and health of her children.  The site has since been given three transitional shelters and many tarps.  We are going to be designing a new structure to house the education and orphanage in ~2600sf.

The thing that has struck me the most through this experience is the bright attitude and positivity of the family and the children.  I am truly humbled at how this group has persevered through extreme adversity.  In the following six weeks we will be working with the family, children and our design fellows to create a sensible solution for this very deserving group.”

First Day at the Office!

After much needed sleep from our journey to Port-au-Prince, we rose early today to the sounds of roosters crowing and the cars honking from the morning travelers outside our windows.  We all ate a light breakfast and headed out early—7:30—to the office, which is about a 15-minute car ride from our residence.

Riding in the car around Port-au-Prince is always eye-opening and captivating.  This morning we saw a lot of children walking along the road headed to school dressed in their matching school uniforms, usually escorted by their loved ones or older siblings.  Over 90% of the schools here in Haiti are privately-run, since the government lacks the resources to provide widespread education.  The markets were already open with women sitting on street corners selling vegetables and fruit, as well as men touting around large baskets on their heads filled with more “basic need” items.

First Impressions....Lasting Imprint

We have arrived safely in Port-Au-Prince, but what a day! A lot of firsts for all of us, but I’ll talk about my impressions. We had a smooth 6 am flight out of Minneapolis and arrived in Miami just before lunch. After savouring our last ‘American’ meal, we found gate D25 ready to board the short flight to Port-Au-Prince. Unexpectedly, we had our first Haitian ‘celebrity’ sighting - Michelle Dominique, the wife of Jean Dominique - both co-founders of Radio Haiti. Radio Haiti was the first radio station that broadcast in Creole and disseminated information supporting electoral democracy, rather than political propaganda in support of the dictator. The story of Radio Haiti and Michelle and Jean Dominique is shared through the documentary The Agronomist, which illustrates pure passion in action through Jean and Michelle’s commitment to inform and liberate Haiti’s poor majority through journalism. Recognizing Michelle Dominique at the airport made this real; all of a sudden readings about past dictators such as the Duvalier’s and watching the political activism of the Dominique’s collided with the present. We were about to encounter a new, bigger, reality.
